SharePoint tutorial

What is SharePoint?

- SharePoint is the Microsoft tool which provides way to improve my work and the result of my work. It can also improve the work of my team, my department, my company or my partners.

Sites and communities: store and manage information as well as to collaborate with colleagues.
Content Management: Set the compliance features for the information stored. Use information in your already existing working environment like Microsoft office.
Search: Retrieve information independent of their storage or to find people with skills needed.
Insights: Allows you to get, prepare and to visualize information stored in different repository.
It provides solution to all your information management needs with secure and remote access.
Composites: Enhanced with no code solutions.

What is share point for end users?

- May be too complex to use.
- If you are trying to search column in a list, it works with one column globally defined in columns gallery but not with another locally created.
- Sharepoint is usually easy to use with its cool features including uploading, filtering, sorting or grouping a list.

What is Share Point for developers?

- Share point developers evolve from ASP.NET developers and as a web developer you are used to implement things and to test it right away pressing F5.
- As a SharePoint developer, you need to configure XML, deploy a solution, need to know about infrastructure including Active Directory, SQL Server, DNS or IIS..
- Worst thing as share point developer is to explain sharepoint and how to use it to consultants, project managers, end user, authors and even administrators.
- Actual task of development gets smaller and smaller as your knowledge grows.

What is SharePoint for administrators?

- Share point is a complex system.
- It does not behave sometimes as expected.
- On one day it works and on another day it suddenly stops working. e.g if you have hundreds of different folders on file shares and no global read group you need to manually assign read permission to search account which can result in membership of hundreds of groups for search service account.
- Using Kerberos the token becomes bigger and bigger and only after a service restart you encounter problem of search not working.
- Looking for the reason takes lot of time and requires lot of specialized knowledge.

Create, Edit and Share your knowledge on pages:

- Create a SharePoint page: Site Actions> New Page:Campaign > Create
- Configure the text layout: Text Layout >  Two columns and a header.
- Format text: Change font size of header to 36pts. Enter bullet points for left column.
- Insert an image and WebParts: Editing tools> Insert Picture: From Computer. Browse then click OK.
Insert : existing list: shared libraries: Add. Shared document> Down arrow> Edit web parts.
- Create links between pages: Edit > Put [[Home]] brackets between the links.

Make data and documents easier to find:

Personalized Views:

- Filter items based on the order(ascending or descending order).
- Filter based no the type of the document.
- To create a personal view go to Library Tools > Library > Create View(Standard View, Calendar View, Access View, Data Sheet View, Gantt View)
- All documents: View name: My Documents > Create a personal view >  Sort by Modified. (Show item in descending order).
- Show items when column: Created by(is equal to) [Me]

Display custom view on the page:

- Create a column
- Create a view
- Display the view in a web part
- Library> Create column(Name: Event)> Choice(Menu to choose from)

Created blog for information sharing and connecting with other teams.
